Nami Island is NAMI-nated for Best Day Tour In South Korea

Nami Island is one of those places I’ve always wanted to visit ever since I came here in South Korea. Then I got a message from my superfriend Rico’s sister, Ate Che, asking me about South Korea and asked me to tour them around (with her husband Kuya Molly) in Seoul. Of course, I happily said yes (more lakwatsa (travel) more fun!). The day came that they arrived in Seoul and luckily they wanted to go to Nami Island. I think my practice of The Secret paid off.

Nami Island is one of the most visited tourist attraction in South Korea. It was the shooting location of Winter Sonata, a K-drama that was very popular in the 2000’s.  It could be one of the most popular if not the most popular tourist site outside of Seoul. It’s a half-moon shaped island and can be accessed by a 5-minute ferry ride. You can even zip-line your way to the island as well, if you are a bit adventurous.

On Our Way To Gapyeong Station

So we met in Myeongdong where they stayed and took the subway to go to Cheongnyangni station so we can ride the ITX train. Big mistake! We did not book our tickets in advance. It was already full and the next few hours as well. So we decided to take the regular subway to reach Gapyeong station.

“Di nyo ba ako kilala? Ako si Carissaaa!!!”
After an hour and a half, we reached Gapyeong Station. We got a little bit hungry so we bought barbeque skewers and egg bread stall beside the station, both so tasty and flavorful. Highly recommended!
It’s like 12 inches of meat. Around 8 inches if it’s cold…

This is the map of Gapyeong and shows the major tourist sites and attractions. This map shows the 3 main ones which are Nami Island, Petite France, and Garden of Morning Calm. The idea for the day was, we will be going to all of those 3 but unfortunately, due to time constraints, we were only able to visit 2.

Just a brief background on Nami Island, it was actually the final resting place of General Nami, a historical figure in the Joseon Dynasty. A retired Korean bank governor named Minn Byeong-do bought the island in 1965 and transformed it into what it is today.

So from Gapyeong station, you can either take the shuttle bus going to Nami Island or you can also take a taxi which is a fairly short ride.

Welcome To Nami Island

We finally arrived in Nami Island and the cute thing about it is they called it Naminara Republic. The concept is, Nami is not just an island but a country. We proceeded to the ticket booth to buy tickets. Entrance fee is 10,000 won but it was discounted to 8,000 won for tourists.

Ride the ferry – First thing you will see are these giant ferries that will take you to the island. It takes about 5 minutes to go from the port to the island. You don’t have to worry if you miss it because there’s another one coming in 5 minutes. Some boats have deck while others do not. But that won’t stop you from enjoying the view. You can see the other islands nearby and of course, the other boats going here and there. If you look up, you would see that you could even take a zip-line to go to the island. If you are feeling a little bit adventurous you can definitely do this. It costs W38,000 for ziplining as of this writing.

The Facade of the Island

The island can be very touristy (meaning: there’s a lot of people going here) but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the view. The island has plenty of areas for everyone to explore and enjoy.

Lane of Trees – The lane of trees in this island is a famous spot to take pictures and selfies. The metasequoia and ginkgo trees line up the pathways going to other areas of the island.

Winter Sonata

The love story of Jun and Janice, Winter Sonata starring Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo has taken the Philippines back in the 2000’s. Nami Island was the perfect background for the romantic K-drama and has made the island famous for people who are visiting South Korea. Couples that go to island mimic scenes from Winter Sonata like when they first kissed and when they were making snowballs.

Jun and Janice even have statues erected for them. This is also a famous spot to take pictures. With that said, be ready to wait for your turn as others try to take a snap or selfie as well.

uy lumalaki ah…

Exploring the other parts of the island, you will find other interesting things like a pen for ostriches, elevated bike lanes, mini-concert, a caricature drawing shop and a whole lot more.

the island is amazing, but… and it’s a big but..

There were still other areas on the island that we were not able to explore because we had to leave early to go to Petite France and Garden of the Morning Calm. However, the experience of being on the island is one that would be remembered forever.

TIP: During Autumn which is around 3rd or 4th week of October is the best time to go to Nami Island because that’s when the leaves are yellow and orange.
